Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ Tech

Forty-five years after its debut as a utilitarian military vehicle, the Geländewagen finally trades fossil fuels for electrons. Mercedes wisely chose not to reinvent the wheel with the G 580 with EQ Technology; instead, they preserved the classic brick-like aerodynamics, external door hinges, and signature bolt-action door click, dropping a powerhouse electric drivetrain underneath. The heart of the machine is a quad-motor system—one independent motor at each wheel—pushing out a collective 579 horsepower and a brutal 859 lb-ft of torque to launch the massive SUV from 0-60 mph in a sports-car-rivaling 4.1 seconds. Powering the setup is a 116-kWh battery pack tucked securely inside the ladder chassis, completely sealed and shielded from rocks by a massive carbon-fiber composite underbody plate.

On the dirt, that quad-motor layout unlocks physics-defying capabilities that petrol engines simply cannot match. Its headline feature is the G-Turn, which spins the truck 360 degrees completely on the spot, while G-Steering drags the inside rear wheel to virtually eliminate off-road turning radiuses on tight trails. Visually, the EV subtle distinguishes itself from the V8 with a slightly raised hood, rear wheel-arch air curtains, and an optional rectangular lockbox on the rear door optimized for charging cables. Inside, the cabin remains a fortress of luxury, seamlessly blending rugged physical switches for the off-road modes with dual 12.3-inch digital displays and ambient lighting.
