Tom Sachs x Nike “Demerits” Sneaker

The Tom Sachs and Nike partnership—operating under the NikeCraft banner—stands as one of the most anti-hype, utility-driven collaborations in sneaker history. Melding Sachs’ “Space Program” industrial aesthetic with Nike’s athletic innovation, the relationship began in 2012 with the launch of the legendary Mars Yard. Built for rocket scientists and astronauts navigating simulated Martian terrain, that initial release established a design language rooted in raw materials, exposed foam, and pure functionality.

Inspired by Sachs’ near-expulsion for flouting his high school’s rigid dress code, the NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe “Demerits” represents a rugged evolution of his “ordinary shoe for extraordinary people” ethos. Marking the first leather iteration in the GPS series, the shoe swaps out the standard knit for perforated black ECCO® leather with heavy-duty pebbled overlays. The striking white leather Swoosh nods to Sachs’ teenage hack of marker-inking soccer cleats to slip past school administrators. Built to be worn to pieces, it features a durable three-piece molded cup sole with a soft gum midsole and a classic rubber waffle outsole. Dual Team Royal blue pull tabs—sourced from automotive-grade seat belt webbing—provide a sharp flash of contrast, while Sachs’ signature handwriting finishes the heel.
