HOTEL FORK & KNIFE Miyajima pairs architectural restraint with high-end gastronomy, acting as a meditative cultural retreat just across the channel from Japan’s sacred “Island of Gods”. Designed by acclaimed architect and artist Fumihiko Sano, the 34-room sanctuary masterfully reinterprets traditional Japanese design. The experience begins in the entrance lobby, where deep reddish-brown walls and a diagonally intersecting wood lattice ceiling frame a gallery space directly inspired by the iconic Noh stage of Itsukushima Shrine. Locally crafted Hiroshima lanterns hang overhead, casting a soft, moody glow over rotating art exhibitions.Inside, the adult-only property maintains a strict aesthetic focus on natural raw materials, primarily cedar and cypress. Guest rooms feature a modern Japanese layout with raised platforms, minimalist shoji screens, integrated artwork, and massive windows overlooking Setonaikai National Park. On the top floor, a communal indoor/outdoor thermal spa and onsen overlooks the ocean, solving traditional bathing taboos by providing dedicated swimwear so couples and mixed groups can soak together against a backdrop of panoramic views.
