The Under the Reed Roof Guesthouses by Kyiv-based YOD Group trade traditional walls for full-scale transparency, redefining eco-minimalism in a Ukrainian forest. The 50-square-meter cabins radically reinterpret the historic hata-mazanka (a traditional mud-plastered rural hut) by eliminating solid exterior boundaries entirely. Fully glazed facades wrap around the structures, dissolving visually during the day to leave a massive, 33-foot-tall sculptural reed roof looking like it is floating effortlessly over the landscape.
Inside each hideaway, the architecture relies on strict geometric order and functional restraint. The open-concept layout is anchored by a central raw concrete block housing the bathroom, which cleanly partitions the living area from the bedroom. To eliminate visual noise and encourage a digital detox, televisions are intentionally absent. Instead, a minimalist circular fireplace serves as the room’s focal point, providing a sleek, modern nod to the traditional wood-burning Ukrainian stove.
Tactile, grounding materials unify the interior with the surrounding wilderness. Seamless, continuous stone-carpet flooring stretches past the glass boundaries to the outdoor patio, creating an indoor-outdoor flow. Underfloor heating, local timber elements, and custom furnishings crafted exclusively by Ukrainian makers deliver warmth without relying on excess clutter. Hidden deep within the monumental thatched roof, high-efficiency heat pumps and climate systems remain completely out of sight, ensuring a perfectly conditioned, undisturbed forest sanctuary.
